Rob Murdock Jazz Musician & Vocalist

Playing at Tiny's Friday, June 11, 2010 / Friday, June 18, 2010 / Saturday June 26, 2010 (6:30-9:00)

The music commonly known as Jazz has been around for more than a century and encompasses a vast array of styles from traditional standards to swing, bossa nova, blues, bebop, Dixieland, Ragtime, smooth, avant garde, and a multitude of fusions. To the artist, each style is like an art form that defies time, genre and culture. Its common thread is that it is Music of the Spirit. It comes from within, and so it likewise enters into the listener. Jazz is complex in its simplicity and simple in its complexity. Its composers, at work in the creation of this art, more often than not, do give cognizance to its source, this spirit within, but most have moved away from being limitedly defined by ego to being more broadly defined by spirit. Thus, the music influences not only its composers, but the artist and the audience as well. It touches the spirit, and thereby makes people feel good. Rob Murdock’s jazz career spans more than thirty years. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of audiences… from resort-type country clubs all over the southeastern United States, to retirement facilities, corporate events, weddings, festivals and restaurants. Recent performance venues include The Biltmore Estates and the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, and a fundraiser for South Carolina’s Attorney General Henry McMaster, who is running for governor of the state. Rob particularly enjoys working in smaller group venues, where he is eagerly accepted and appreciated, not only for his music, but for his sense of humor and showmanship, and his ability to interact with the audience and make them laugh. His music brings back memories of a bygone era of great jazz, swing and bebop artists, and thereby touches a chord with every generation. He captures the undivided attention of every type of audience – from teenagers and young children to the silver-haired generation, and has even had the American rock band R.E.M. listen avidly to his performance. His combination of abilities is unique and he brings a smile and some “foot-tapping” wherever he goes. Rob has worked with Warren Covington, the famous American trombone player, who took over as band leader for Tommy Dorsey’s ensemble after Dorsey’s death. He also worked with The Pied Pipers Big Band Ensemble in Florida. The original Pied Pipers worked with both Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra in the 1940’s, and were backup artists for the likes of Vic Damone and Billy Eckstine in the 1950’s. His trumpet playing can be fairly characterized as being influenced by the style of Chet Baker; his vocal style is reminiscent of Harry Connick, Jr. or Vic Damone. His music is sparkling, witty, and warm, as is his entire performance.

Bella Musica will be here for their second performance on Friday June 25, 2010 (7:00-9:00)
